Get promoted · Get noticed
Get your work noticed, without the hype
Your work gets noticed when the people who decide hear about it regularly, in plain terms, with credit to the people who helped. Nobody keeps an inventory of your work but you. A short weekly note to your manager does more than any amount of self-promotion.
Why doesn’t good work speak for itself?
Your manager isn’t keeping an inventory of your work. They’re busy with their own. If you want people to know what you’re working on, how you’re improving and what you can do, telling them is part of the job.
Promotions don’t always go to the best performers. They tend to go to the people with the clearest impact, the strongest evidence and the easiest case to argue for.
Isn’t that self-promotion?
Self-promotion is reminding people how good you are. Visibility is a calm, regular account of what moved, with credit to the people who helped. The first backfires. The second is information your manager needs to do their job, and to argue for you.
What should a weekly update say?
Every Friday, send your manager a short note. A few lines is plenty: what got done, what changed because of it, and who helped. Leave out what didn’t move.
Short, plain and regular beats long and occasional. Over a few months, these notes become your review. Keep a copy of each in your brag document.
How should you raise a problem?
Bring a recommendation with every problem: what you’d do about it, and what it would cost. It saves your manager the thinking. Over time it changes how they see you, from someone who reports problems to someone who solves them, and that’s when they start accepting your recommendations without a second look.
Your 1:1 is the natural place for both: what moved, and what you need a decision on.
How do you get talked about when you’re not in the room?
You can’t build that directly. It forms when people rely on you:
- Deliver on important work, consistently. Your name becomes shorthand for safe hands.
- Stay steady under pressure. Reputations set when things are tense.
- Be discreet. People tell you things, and speak well of you, because you don’t pass them on.
- Let credit flow to others. It’s what makes other people champion you.
